What Helped Me After Losing Our Dog: Small Comforts That Keep Her Memory Close

The Morning After

The hardest part of losing a dog isn’t just the moment you say goodbye. It’s the morning after. The house is quiet in a way it wasn’t before. You move through the same routines throughout the day — but something is missing. When you'd give almost anything to hear their paws on the floor or see that familiar face waiting to greet you. When we lost Chessie, that quiet was the part that stayed with me the most.

About Chessie

Chessie wasn’t thought of as a dog — she was equal parts family. She was a mix of Chow and Husky, with a soft, beautiful coat, brown eyes, and a calm, loving presence that filled a room without ever demanding attention.

She was definitely a daddy’s girl, but she and I shared that special bond that often forms between a dog and her “mom.” I knew her moods, her little habits, her healthy foods and treats (despite my husband slipping her table food, which was a no-no), and the comfort of simply having her nearby.

She loved lying out in the backyard, quietly watching over her beautiful garden and the front lawn, where she could be nosy, watching the neighbors and random strangers go by. Ever so selective of who could step on her property and those who could not.

The Quiet After Loss

What made losing Chess even harder was how quickly everything changed. Chessie had a mast cell tumor that we believed surgery had successfully removed. For a while, we were hopeful and thought we had more time with her. But the cancer came back and spread faster than we could get rid of it. One moment, we were holding on to hope, and the next, we were facing a reality we simply weren’t ready for.

That kind of loss leaves an emptiness, no, more like a deep-rooted hole in so many daily moments. The morning coffee before her walk, family car rides with her head sticking out of the window, evenings watching tv, her bed in our bedroom - that now lies empty.  All the ways she filled our home…gone.

When a pet has been part of your life for years, you realize how deeply woven into your daily routines they are. And when they’re gone, it’s those routines that feel the emptiest.

Finding Comfort in Small Ways

During that time, I discovered the personalized keepsakes offered by Canvas Champ, a company that specializes in turning meaningful photos into everyday items. Their approach immediately resonated with me because it reflects something I believe deeply — that memories deserve to be part of our daily lives, not just stored away in our phones. Canvas Champ offers a wide range of personalized photo products designed to turn meaningful memories into everyday keepsakes.

I chose two items featuring Chessie’s photo — their Magic Mug and a Fleece Sherpa Photo Blanket — and what touched me most was how naturally they became part of my everyday life.

The mug has quickly become part of my mornings. There’s something unexpectedly moving about pouring in a hot drink and watching Chessie’s image slowly appear. Honestly, the first time it caught me off guard, and I felt sad, but then it quickly became a welcoming routine that felt like a comforting way to start my day. Seeing her face always made me smile. I missed that so much!

And the sherpa blanket has that same feeling. It gives that soft, warm, and comforting feeling in exactly the way you hope something like this would. Part of my routine is watching television. I have to have my blanket even if it’s 90° outside. I still have myself with a blanket, trapped over my lap.  And this blanket is cozy in the physical sense, but it also carries emotional warmth. Instead of just scrolling past photos on my phone, I can sit with that memory, wrap up in something soft, and feel connected to the love that was such a big part of our home.

Why Keepsakes Like This Matter

That’s what I think Canvas Champ does so well with products like these. They didn’t feel like novelty items but felt more personal. You send in a simple photo, and they turn it into something useful, comforting, and meaningful. And it's all the more special for someone who's lost a pet and is looking for a cozy way to keep their memory close.

These same keepsakes are just as meaningful for someone whose dog or cat is still here and deeply loved. Because we don’t have to wait until loss to honor the companions who make our homes warmer and our lives fuller. Sometimes preserving the memory while you’re still making it becomes one of the most special things you can do, because our pets are never “just pets.” They become part of our routines, our comfort, and our family.

A Beautiful Way to Remember

Having lost Chess, yes, I truly recommend these keepsakes. Nothing can replace or fill the void she left, but I feel like these honor her and in a way, keep her close. I recall someone saying once, "Sometimes healing doesn't come from moving on, it comes from remembering gently." Well, the Canvas Champ Magic Mug and Sherpa Photo Blanket have been great for me!
